What to do at the scene of an Accident

So over the course of the last few articles we have discussed:

1. Insurance Basics
2. When it’s required
3. How much is enough
4. Group Riding Safety

(If you missed any of these, you can check out the motorcycle tab on our website www.hillcrestinsurance.com to refresh your memory)

This month, I want to cover some basics for what to do in the event that you are in an accident.

All situations (especially motorcycle related accidents) are potentially very serious accidents and they are all unique.  But there are some basic tips that we recommend you follow at the scene of any type of motor vehicle accident.  (Obviously, all of these suggestions assume that you are able to perform these tasks)

1. Stop immediately but do not obstruct traffic.  If possible move damaged vehicles to the side of road or emergency lanes.

2. Assist/attend to any injuries. (Do you carry any First Aid Supplies?) Its not a bad idea to go to the emergency room immediately-or as soon as possible to document any injuries.  If not the emergency room see your doctor ASAP.

3. Have someone call the police.

4. Secure the names, phone numbers and addresses of other drivers, witnesses and injured individuals (Do you carry a notepad and pencil with you?)--And, don’t forget to get the name, address and phone number of the towing company if your bike has to be hauled away

5. Secure the make, model and license numbers of all involved vehicles.

6. Document the scene - Make a rough drawing of the scene, showing position of all vehicles and other details. with current cell phone technology, take photographs as soon as possible to document the situation. (the more photos the better, include surroundings, road hazards, other vehicles, your injuries, damaged vehicles, etc)

7. Don’t admit blame or negligence, and do not hastily accept any offer of claim settlement at the scene of an accident. Never sign any documents, waivers, releases etc at the scene, consult your attorney.

8. Remain calm, courteous and consistent with your version of the accident

9. Notify your insurance agent as soon as possible.

10. If you are involved in a Motorcycle Accident that involves injuries, you really should consult an attorney for guidance, these situations are typically very serious and you will want to get the best advice possible on how to navigate through the insurance claim process.
I sincerely hope that you never find yourself in a situation to need the above information.

Here’s wishing you a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday season, hope to see you out there on a ride over the holidays!

Once again, to make the attorneys happy, please be aware that this information is a very simplified overview of insurance and how insurance works.  Please refer to your actual policy documents for guidance and policy conditions, limitations, and exclusions.
